Since our founding in 1878, Maruya Honten has been creating sweets that reflect Niigata’s seasons and environment. The harsh winter gives way into flowering spring. Dazzling summer fades into autumn colorful as a brocade. The distinct seasons, the clear, cool waters, and the rich fertile soil of Niigata all help create the finest ingredients. But it is the daily labors of the farmers that bring them all together. A desire to create sweets that make use of Niigata’s finest ingredients is the foundation of what we do here at Maruya Honten.

Echigo Edamame MochiFrom 483 yen

When you think summer in Niigata, you think edamame. The delicious flavor of Niigata edamame is the best in the nation. Freshly picked edamame soy beans are ground in a pestle and wrapped in mochi for a traditional treat that is just as delicious today.

Niigata Fruit OrchardFrom 320 yen

Pears, peaches, and fruit tomatoes from our Niigata contract farmers are enclosed in French-style jelly. Maruya Honten’s farmers pour their hearts into these “Farmer’s Sweets.”

This traditional French treat is made from a dough containing Niigata’s legendary Tsukada white butter and fresh locally raised eggs, which is topped with praline and baked. Made with a wish for harbor city Niigata’s continued prosperity.
